PALM ISLANDS - TRANSITIONAL ZONE DEVELOPMENTS IN THE GULF STATES
The commercial development of Palm Island, artificially constructed off the UAE Dubai coast is moving a pace. It can now been recognised on satellites such as ERS-2 SAR and by Advanced Synthetic Aperture Radar (ASAR) onboard Envisat, ESA latest Earth Observation satellite. Unlike optical imagery SAR images work by mapping surface roughness, based on the strength of radar backscatter reflected back up to space.

As the construction of building on the island is started the radar is strongly refelected from the roofs and other building surfaces. Two Islands are projected for Jumeirah and Jebal Ali. The palm shape is constructed from 100 milliom cubic metres of rock and sand and is projected to cost €1.2 billion. The twin exclusive developments will house over 60 luxury hotels, 5000 residential villas, 5000 apartments, marinas, water theme parks, restaurants, shopping malls, sports facilities, health spas, cinemas and numerous dive sites and will expand the city as a tourist location. Some options have already been secured by David Beckham and Michael Owen as well as four other Manchester United players.

The twin Palms are part of a larger plan for land reclamation called "The World" – which will comprise a series of 200 islands situated off the Dubai coast built in the shape of the world and due for completion in 2008.
